It will not, I hope, appear to be merely an argument pro domo (in the literal sense of that metaphor) to observe that the most painful lacunashocking, but not surprising, to paraphrase a remark of Dr. Johnsonin the meetings and publications of the American Society of Church History, and therefore also in this volume, is an (almost, but not quite) complete lack of attention to Eastern Christendom, whether Greek or Slavic or Levantine. The liturgical, political, and doctrinal history of Eastern Christendom is an indispensable component of any responsible research in all of those fields, but ignoring the Christian East has long been characteristic both of the churchmanship and of the scholarship of the West, whether Roman Catholic or Protestant.
Four years before the founding of the ASCH, the American Historical Association had been established as the first national historical society in the United States. Its chief architect was Herbert Baxter Adams (18501901), a tireless promoter of professional history who served as the AHA's secretary until 1900. D. degree at Heidelberg under Johann BluntschliAdams joined the faculty of the newly opened Johns Hopkins University. There he supervised historical studies during the 1880s and 1890s, becoming director of its celebrated Historical Seminary in 1881 and, in 1882, editor of its influential Studies in History and Political Science.
